LO3- Understand how global industries use social media

Three bullet points why you think social media is a useful tool for global industries when managing a product or campaign.

- Allows companies to keep messages constistent by using things like hash tags
- Creates a hype around 'teaser material'
- Tasks can be distributed across the world and collaborations are easier.
- People are able to crowdfund/source
- Reaches a specific target audience

TOOL 1
Solo is a Free task management app for freelance workers. The data which you place on the app stays private - you are able to share 'boards' on which you can plan upcoming events, projects and Tasks. Solo also allows you to directly send invoices and reminders to clients when they're due saving you time and effort - Solo effectively serves as your online assistant.
Solo allows you to keep up-to-date with appointments and milestones which need to be completed - this is useful when leading a busy Freelance career as often names and dates go awry and diaries not kept up to date - the easy interface of this website allows you to complete menial tasks quickly with minimal fuss.

TOOL 2

Basecamp is the number one choice for companies, freelancers and small organisations - It allows mutiple people to converse and discuss issues with eachother over an organised piece of software as opposed to the typical messy email thread. Unlike Solo it allows you to upload files to the online tool which can be viewed by multiple people at once - this information is kept private to those within your group.

Should you not know how to begin a project, there are ready made templates for you to kickstart your planning and involve your team members, this makes it easier to use first time and helps you develop ideas for how you would next time start your own 'Basecamp'

Exam Work

- For the exam, i need to work on the final question of the paper - this includes key words, theories and jusifications.
- I need to give explainations and examples for all of the explain and identify questions within the paper
- Think more about how wikinomics has affected the way we use social media platforms.

This advertisment campaign was effective because it created the well crafted hype based on the already successful meme craze - the campaign was well advertised on instagram as a social media platform however managed to reach Twitter and Facebook as a result of its popularity. Amazon even jumped on the trend advertising the watches launch on friday .

The memes were released on the website at the same time to provide a gallery of viewing much like people do when they find a page of memes on social media - this means that viewers were subject to looking at a variety of the meme posts.

LO2: Social Media, Globalisation & Moral panics

Crowdfunding - Gaining the funding you need from the public to progress with a project.
Crowdsourcing - Gaining the equipment/personnel you need from the public to progress with a project

Moral panic - Is the result of the hypodermic syringe theory, the mass audience become subject to fear because of something they have become exposed to within the media and begin to demonise a certain group within society (folk devil) . This theory is applied to all media texts. (Stanley Cohen, 1972).

The use of new technologies and society leads to moral panic due to a rise in online grooming and revenge porn. This can cause bullying.
Revenge porn in particular is now an offence which can result in prosecution.

Trolling - when someone is communicating in a negative way on an online account.

- Pro Ana
- Self harm
- Trolling
- Revenge porn
- Cyber Bullying

What media texts/technologies have caused moral panic?

- GTA
- Clock Work Orange
- FaceBook
- Snapchat
- COD
- BatMan Dark Knight
- Twitter

- Stanley Cohen wrote about the clash between mods and rockers - Clacton on sea
- This was over exaggerated
- The same theory is applied to trolling in the 21st century
- People from a specific class are clamping down on the matter
- Females are targeted more

I partially agree with the moral panics regarding social media as it is becoming more frequent to see stories of young children being groomed by older men and women online and the effect this can have on them in later life. However I do believe that it is the way we use social media that determines its safety and that it is a small majority of users that fuel these panics therefore we shouldn't be overly worried about the effect it is having on us as a society.

LO2: Crowd Funding and Crowd Sourcing

Crowdfunding - When you appeal to the public to gain funding
Crowdsourcing - When you appeal to the public to gain equipment and personnel

Globalisation is the process of international integration arising from the interchange and exchange of products, ideas , politics and in particular, popular culture.

Globalisation is also seen as a way in which international boundaries that once existed are broken down by the advent of new technologies (web 2.0/social media)

Globalised companies:

- McDonalds
- Starbucks
- Disney
- Bollywood
- Friends

Global reach is the way in which a product has the potential to reach a global audience owing to new methods of distribution and marketing (i.e. the internet and VOD services)

Global Village is the idea that physical boundaries between countries appear smaller owing to new media technologies and that because of this the world is actually one big village where everyone can communicate to each other in an instant. The theorist who discussed this originally was Marshall McLuhan (1964).

Crowdfunding is the online appeal to a wider audience to find financial support for an upcoming project for which you may not have the appropriate funds. With the development of Web 2.0 it has now become a possibility for us to become a part of a Global village - this means although an idea for a project may come from here in the UK, a investor in the US would be able to contact with and support your idea through the production process. We are no longer limited to those around us due to the breakdown of physical boundaries between countries.

Crowdsourcing is a form of gaining people and equipment for a project should you not have the available materials to do so. This is effective because of Global reach - we are now able to reach people all across the globe which widens your potential sponsorship audience.

Kickstarted was launched in 2009, it is where a project can get the financial support it needs to get off the ground.

Product that was crowdfunded:

Coolest cooler was a crowdfunded project which was funded using online tool 'Kickstarter'. In August 2014 the project raised $13,285,266 from 62,642 funders which centres around a smart chiller that incorporates an ice crusher, Bluetooth speaker and USB charger. The idea behind this Kickstarter project was to produce the 'coolest' cooler on the market which is suitable for the modern day picnic - Alongside the cooler itself, owners of this piece of kit can purchase additional accessories such as melamine plates, chopping boards, corkscrews and knives , all available in the chosen colour you purchased your cooler in. These accessories range from $9.99-$39.00 per item alongside the original cooler price of $399.00 which makes this handy picnic tool worth the original $13,285,266 invested in the idea some 3 years ago.

Initially the kickstarter project failed to meet its proposed target which enabled the product to begin production, however with thanks to WEB 2.0 and global reach/villages - people from all over the world were able to browse the proposed idea and offer whatever funding they could toward an invention they believed would be successful on the market today.

Assesed Task - Part 2

SUITS

Suits is a US legal drama aired in the states and the UK using broadcasting channel DAVE. Suits US have over time promoted the release of each season using various social media applications, the most common of these being Instagram. Suits season 7 was released on July 12th for American audiences and should be available in the coming months for European viewers also.

To advertise the release of the US season 7, @Suits_usa Instagram account posted a series of 'countdown images' which featured each of the main characters-The post included a link to the broadcaster of the episodes (@usa_network) and catchphrases/quotes from the series that only viewers/fans would recognise. The series of posts followed a pattern through the characters starting with the newest of the legal team and gives the viewers a chance to reacquaint with the characters 5 days prior to the re-release of the series. This encourages viewers to interact once more with the series a week before the broadcast of the first episode, most importantly of all it redirects the Instagram users to the page of the network from which the episodes will be broadcasted which gives further information on the series for example the 100th episode.

In addition to this, throughout the time the programme was missing from our screens and we were awaiting the announcement of the new series, a series of GIF memes were put into circulation aimed to amuse viewers and even remind them of episodes they wanted to re-watch. This form of communication is favoured particularly by young people at present, therefore, Suits USA have employed this tactic to re-interest their young adult 16-34-year-old target audience. The platform on which they chose to release these 'memes' links again to the target audience they are aiming to appeal to as it is likely that those aged between 16 and 34 will be familiar with social networking and are likely to have access to an Instagram account. The same online material was posted from the shows own Facebook and Twitter accounts, this provides the synergy needed to constantly remind viewers that the show will soon be back on live television - once more this links to the 16-34 year old demographic who are stereotypically expected to watch suits , but also helps widen this to potentially a 34+ age group who are less likely to be involved in Instagram but more on Facebook and Twitter to keep in touch with family and friends.
